F&Q
What's the difference between cold brew and regular iced coffee?
Most iced coffees start with hot-brewed coffee poured over ice, which produces a drink that can sometimes taste watered down. Coffee that's brewed cold, however, uses time rather than heat, producing a smoother, less bitter beverage that's delicious on its own, poured over ice, or integrated in popular cocktail or mocktail recipes.
What's the best grind size for cold brew?
Coarse grind is a good starting point. If you purchase beans from a coffee shop, ask the barista to grind for French press, roughly the consistency of kosher salt. Many home grinders have no grind settings; in this case, grind your beans 75% of the time recommended for hot brew systems. For years, we have recommended using the coarsest grind setting. Today, however, we realize that the best grind size for cold brew is a more subjective matter. We now suggest grinding to accommodate the brewer/brewing method as well as the recommended brew time. Grind finer for pour-over and drip brewers, more coarse for French press and other immersion brewers.
Can cold brew concentrate be served hot?
Absolutely. The Toddy® Cold Brew System makes a delicious, smooth-drinking coffee concentrate that can be enjoyed hot, over ice, or even mixed into cocktails/mocktails. To warm it, just add boiling water to the concentrate – or if you have access to an espresso wand, you can dilute your cold brew and then steam the contents.
